El Santuario de Chimayo, New Mexico
El Santuario (The Shrine) was built between l8l4 and l8l6. It is especially known for El Posito, a hole in the floor of a side chapel filled with healing earth. Pilgrims come to take a sample of this earth and to pray for healing.
El Santuario de Chimayo, New Mexico
13 March 2008 - We visited this tiny church in Chimayo
on the high road between Santa Fe and Taos in the
Sangre
de Cristo Mountains. Testimonials of miracles
abound -
similar to those that have taken place in Lourdes,
France -
and the similarity doesn't end there -
There is a clear running
stream nearby and evidence of
healings - crutches and
walking
sticks left at the shine.
There were few people there when we visited yet for Easter next week
pilgrims will arrive in their tens of thousands from all over
the world - well over 40,000 are expected in this little village.
Pilgrims have been coming for hundreds of years - with many
walking from as far away as Santa Fe and beyond to take
part
in the Easter festival, pilgrimage and prayers.
Weaving the Spirit of the Land
SANCTUARY
From the Desert I came,
Where the Rocks speak
and the Winds sing,
From the Desert I came,
Where the Sands are sparkling jewels
And the Sun bathed me daily.
From the Desert I came,
Where the Stars splashed radiance upon me,
Cleansing my thoughts,
Sobering my mind,
Baptizing my soul,
Washing my spirit,
Renewing my energy.
From the desert I came,
Where the Moon touched me
And poured Grace upon me
Like a great flood.
From the Desert I came,
Where all about me there was Peace
From the Desert I came
From the land of limitless treasures
My gratitute is boundless. Bill Worrell

Indian Art
Chimayo community is known for its fine Spanish and
Native American weaving and crafts. Here is an example
of a weaving done in this small community. This weaving
makes a series of artistic statements each linked by colour
and design to the next.
Even though yarns and dyes determine the date of a
weaving - this weaving reflects the ageless panoramic
beauty of the mountains near Chimayo. With the Jemez
Mountains lined in the horizon and the Truchas Peaks
13,000 feet in elevation nestled right next to Chimayo,
it is easy to see how the weaver's artistry dipped into
the sublime coloured lights darting over the mountain
peaks to create the diamond patterned shapes in this
superb weaving.
